About the Author

JOHN WIJNGAARDS is a theologian, scripture scholar and missionary with wide academic, pastoral and administrative experience. He is at present director of Housetop Centre, London.

For thirteen years he taught scripture and pastoral formation in the Interdiocesan Seminary at Hyderabad (India). He established an adult religious education centre working through publications, courses and radio programmes throughout India. He was a member of the National Advisory Council of the episcopal conference of India and secretary of the pastoral planning commission for the dioceses of Andhra Pradesh. In 1976 he was elected Vicar General of the Mill Hill Fathers, a function he held until 1982.

In this book John Wijngaards examines the topical question of the ordination of women. He presents his findings with ease and fluency for the general reader.

With the care and precision of a theologian, he bases his analysis on the teaching, statements and thinking of Jesus as found in the New Testament. He has, in this book, done the hard thinking that must be the ground-work of any discussion on the possible ordination of women to the priesthood.
